Qalam is a word processor that runs on your own computer. It is built so that your writing stays yours.
What Qalam collects
Nothing about your writing. Qalam has no account system, no telemetry, no analytics, no advertising, and no crash reporting, and your documents never reach the developer. Only two optional things involve the developer's server, and each keeps the minimum it needs — see "Qalam Credits" and "Buying Qalam Pro outside the App Store" below.
Where your documents live
Your documents are stored as files on your own device, in the location you choose. Qalam does not upload, back up, or synchronise them anywhere. Crash-recovery snapshots are likewise stored only on your device.
Qalam also stores small preferences on your device — your interface language, zoom level, default font and size, your personal spelling dictionary, your تخلص (pen name) for شعر cards, and any AI API key you choose to enter. These never leave your device except as described below.
When text or audio leaves your device: the optional AI features
Qalam includes optional AI features. All of them are off unless you set them up with your own API key, and each runs only when you explicitly invoke it:
- AI proofreading — sends the text being proofread (the document or your selection) to the service you chose.
- Couplet explanation — sends the couplet you selected, together with the metre Qalam identified for it, to the service you chose.
- Word meaning — sends the word you asked about and the sentence it appears in, so the meaning can be read in context.
- Urdu dictation — records audio only while you are dictating and sends that recording for transcription.
- Read aloud — sends the passage being read (from the cursor, or your selection), one paragraph at a time, to be turned into speech.
Proofreading, couplet explanation and word meaning use Google Gemini (see Google's privacy terms for the Gemini API) or Anthropic Claude (see Anthropic's privacy policy), whichever you chose; dictation uses Google Gemini; read aloud uses Microsoft Azure AI Speech (see Microsoft's privacy statement), in the Azure region you chose.
Each request travels over an encrypted connection using your own API key, so your relationship for that request is directly with that provider, under their terms. Qalam does not proxy, copy, log, or retain the text or audio; the speech it plays is kept only in temporary files on your device, deleted when reading stops. Nothing is sent in the background, on a schedule, or without your action.
Qalam Credits (optional)
Qalam Pro users can run the AI features without an API key of their own by paying with Qalam Credits. In that case the request goes through Qalam's own server (qalam.stzdeveloper.com, hosted by Cloudflare) to the provider — Anthropic Claude for text features, Microsoft Azure AI Speech for read aloud, Google Gemini for dictation:
- Your text or audio is passed on to answer that one request and is never stored or logged by Qalam's server.
- Your credit account is kept so your balance survives: an internal account id tied to your Qalam Pro purchase (your licence, or your App Store purchase), a credential stored on your device, the packs you bought, and a ledger of what each request cost — the feature used, its size, and the provider's token count. No names, no text, no audio.
- Credit packs bought in the App Store are paid to Apple; on the web they are paid through Paddle (see below). The server checks each App Store purchase with Apple and receives Apple's notice if one is refunded.
Buying Qalam Pro outside the App Store
Direct downloads and the Microsoft Store version can buy Qalam Pro and credit packs on the web, through Paddle (paddle.com), our reseller: the checkout and receipt show STZ Developer, and your card statement PADDLE.NET* STZDEVELO. Paddle handles the payment details; the developer never sees them. Qalam's server keeps your email address (to send a recovery link if you reinstall or change computers), your licence, and a one-way fingerprint of each computer it is activated on (a hash, not a hardware serial), so a licence can be moved between your machines.
Other network connections
- Update check (direct downloads only) — the version of Qalam distributed outside the App Store checks the public releases page once a day to see whether a newer version exists. The request contains no personal information or document content. The App Store version makes no such request; updates come through the App Store itself.
- App Store purchases — Qalam Pro and credit packs bought in the App Store are processed entirely by Apple; the developer never sees payment details.
If you never use the AI features, credits or a web purchase, Qalam makes no other network connections.
Spellcheck and poetry tools
Spellchecking, poetry alignment, and تقطیع (metrical scansion) are entirely offline. The dictionary is bundled with the app, and words you add to your personal dictionary stay on your device.
Children
Qalam is a general-purpose writing tool and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this same address with a new date.
