Privacy Policy — قلم (Qalam)

Qalam is a word processor that runs on your own computer. It is built so that your writing stays yours.

What Qalam collects

Nothing. Qalam has no account system, no telemetry, no analytics, no advertising, and no crash reporting. The developer receives no information about you or your documents.

Where your documents live

Your documents are stored as files on your own device, in the location you choose. Qalam does not upload, back up, or synchronise them anywhere. Crash-recovery snapshots are likewise stored only on your device.

Qalam also stores small preferences on your device — your interface language, zoom level, default font and size, your personal spelling dictionary, your تخلص (pen name) for شعر cards, and any AI API key you choose to enter. These never leave your device except as described below.

When text or audio leaves your device: the optional AI features

Qalam includes two optional AI features. Both are off unless you set them up with your own API key, and both run only when you explicitly invoke them:

• AI proofreading — sends the text being proofread (the document or your selection) to the service you chose.
• Urdu dictation — records audio only while you are dictating and sends that recording for transcription.

The supported services are Google Gemini (see Google's privacy terms for the Gemini API) and Anthropic Claude (see Anthropic's privacy policy). The request travels over an encrypted connection using your own API key, so your relationship for that request is directly with that provider, under their terms. Qalam does not proxy, copy, log, or retain the text or audio. Nothing is sent in the background, on a schedule, or without your action.

Other network connections

• Update check (direct downloads only) — the version of Qalam distributed outside the App Store checks the public releases page once a day to see whether a newer version exists. The request contains no personal information or document content. The App Store version makes no such request; updates come through the App Store itself.
• App Store purchases — the optional Qalam Pro purchase is processed entirely by Apple. The developer never sees your payment details.

If you never use the AI features, Qalam makes no other network connections.

Spellcheck and poetry tools

Spellchecking, poetry alignment, and تقطیع (metrical scansion) are entirely offline. The dictionary is bundled with the app, and words you add to your personal dictionary stay on your device.

Children

Qalam is a general-purpose writing tool and does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this same address with a new date.
